What causes price differences in duvets?

"Duvets are all the same..." - Not at all!

Should it be a low-priced duvet or a more expensive one? Does the price justify the differences in quality? What are the differences? - Choosing the right duvet can make you lose sleep, because at first glance they all look the same.

It is obvious what a good down duvet should do: it must warm quickly and keep the warmth constant without heat or moisture accumulating under the blanket. The sleeping climate should be pleasant, cosy, warm and dry for the entire duration of sleep. This is how a good duvet enables healthy and restful sleep and thus also promotes quality of life. But what does it take to fulfil these requirements? We at duvetsuisse.com know and are happy to share it with you. You can find our answers here:

1. Large down with strong fill power.

Down is one of the best and most natural filling materials for bedding, clothing, and sleeping bags. Their properties are appreciated all over the world. The warming effect of fluffy down with its millions of air chambers is unique. Down is breathable, ultra-light, durable and sustainable. The bigger the down, the better! Large flakes of down warm and air-condition much better than small flakes. Since smaller down insulates worse, a larger amount is needed. However, this makes the duvet heavy and less able to transport moisture.

In addition, there is the fill power of the down. This describes their ability to regain their original volume after being compressed. The higher the fill power of the down, the more air it can trap and thus provide a high level of insulation.

2. High down content

"90% new, pure goose down" means that the filling is made up of 90% down and 10% tiny feathers by weight. The higher the down content in the filling, the lighter and warmer the duvet.

The designation "new" means that the content consists of down and feathers used for the first time, meaning that it does not contain any already used and regenerated material. And "pure" means that the contents may be goose down mixed with a maximum of 10% duck down. These are smaller than goose down and cheaper.

3. High quality cotton shell

Even the best down is of no use if it is packed in heavy, airtight covers. That is why the covers of quality duvets are made of fine and light cotton fabrics such as batiste or cambric. These transport moisture well, are down-proof and protect against mites. In addition, down products can be washed at up to 60°C and tumble dried at 100°C, making them fresh and bacteria-free again.

To put it in a nutshell:

Good duvets have a high down content of new and pure goose or duck down. The down should have as large flakes as possible, with a good fill power. The cover consists of a light and down-proof cotton fabric.

Inferior duvets, on the other hand, have heavy or synthetic covers, and the contents consist of small and possibly regenerated down with weak fill power. The down content is less than 70%, the rest of the content consists of feathers, which are heavy and insulate poorly.
